Can I monitor the size of the folders in my mailbox?
You cannot view your folder sizes or monitor the size of your mailbox using Outlook Web Access, webmail.UCHSC.edu.
The campus password policy states: "In order to protect computers, information and other related resources, the UCHSC requires its system users to have "strong" passwords."
This means that you will be notified to change your password on 90 day intervals.
Your password will need to:
- be at least 8 characters
- not contain a user name
- not contain a 3 or 4 letter word found in the dictionary
- contain 3 of these 4 categories
- capital letters
- lowercase letters
- numbers
- special characters, such as * ! %
The password change affects your email and campus dial up as well as the login for class evaluations.
How to change your password (Must use the latest version of Internet Explorer)
- Open your email via (http://webmail.uchsc.edu)
- Click on the OPTIONS icon
- Scroll down the page and click on the CHANGE PASSWORD button
- the domain is Stargate
- the account is your email username
How do I create a mailing list using Outlook on the Web?
- Click on the arrow of the New icon.
- Choose Distribution List
- Name the list.
- Type the recipient's email address. Or, type the first and last name of a recipient. As long as the name appears in the campus Global Address List or your Contacts folder the email address will be added automatically
- Click on the Add button or press Enter to add the entry.
- Click on the Save and Close button.
Now you only need to open the Contacts folder, click on the entry, and click on the icon with the envelope in front of the contact card at the top of the window to compose a message to your new distribution list.
How do I delete e-mail messages?
There is more than one method for deleting e-mail messages. Multiple messages may be highlighted in any folder by clicking on one message, then hold the Control key on the keyboard while clicking on other items. Once the messages are highlighted they can be deleted as one.
Method One: While reading a message click on the black X icon (Delete Message) at the top.
Method Two: Click on a message(s) in your Inbox to highlight it. Click on the black X icon (Delete Message) on the toolbar.
Method Three: Once a message is highlighted you may use the Delete button on the computer keyboard.
Method Four: You may use the mouse to click and drag highlighted messages to the Deleted Items folder.
Deleted messages are sent from your Inbox to the Deleted Items folder.
Open the Deleted Items folder, then click on the wastebasket (Empty Deleted Items Folder) icon to empty the Deleted Items folder.
How do I empty my full mailbox? or My mailbox is full or over its size limit. What can I do?
If your folders are full, you may receive an "over size limit" message. The most common cause of a full mailbox is excess messages in your Inbox, Sent Items and/or Delete Items folder.
Troubleshooting Steps
If you can still access your mail, view the folders of your mailbox (see instructions below). Then follow the instructions for deleting messages.
If you cannot open your mailbox, call the E-mail Support line for assistance.

Use the arrows at the top right to view the pages of your Inbox. Try to get rid of any extra messages. Follow the instructions for deleting messages. - The Sent Items folder
To view your Sent Items folder, click on the Folders button to the left of the the Inbox. Every time a message is sent, a copy of the message is saved to the Sent Items folder. Sent messages can be saved offline (to your computer) by copying the text to a word processing document (in WordPad, MS Word, or Word Perfect) and saving the file on a hard drive or floppy diskette. Then the messages can be deleted from the Sent Items folder. Follow the instructions for deleting messages. - The Drafts folder
Messages that encounter delivery difficulties are automatically saved. These must be deleted or sent on manually. - The Deleted Items Folder
All deleted messages are sent to the Deleted Items folder. This folder should be emptied on a regular basis. Click on the recycle bin (Empty Deleted Items folder) icon to empty the Deleted Items folder.
How do I organize my e-mail using folders?
Create a folder in your Inbox
- From the Inbox View, click on the down arrow next to New on the Outlook toolbar and choose New Folder.
- Type the name you wish to use in the textbox.
- Make sure to highlight a main folder, such as Inbox, as a location for the new folder.
- Click on OK.
Move mail to a folder
- Highlight or open the message.
- Click on the icon that is a couple of sheets of paper behind a folder.
- From the list of folders click on the desired location, subfolders are indicated by a + next to the main folder. You may create a new folder at this time by clicking on the New Folder button on the bottom right of the window.
- When the destination folder is highlighted, click on the OK button at the bottom of the list.
How do I use the Out-of-Office assistant?
From the Inbox
- Look on the left side of the screen for the OPTIONS icon. Click on it.
- The screen that opens has a text box about halfway down. Type the message you wish to send as a reply to every message you receive.
- Click on the "I am currently out of the office" button to turn on the auto-reply.
- Scroll to the bottom of the screen to click on OK.
