As of Monday, June 30, all Blackwell journal content - including full-text HTML and PDF versions of articles from current issues and issues published online before print - will be transferred to the Wiley Interscience journal platform.

The publisher reports that automatic redirect should be in place for all Blackwell journal URLs, so after this change is complete, all links should automatically work whether they are in PubMed, the Wiley web site, or our Find Journals and Article Linker web services.

Estimated Outage Times
The vendors have given us the following projected outage times for the weekend of June 27-June 29:

• 7 pm, Friday, June 27 - The Blackwell platform becomes permanently unavailable
• 3 am, Saturday, June 28 - The Wiley platform becomes temporarily unavailable
• 7 pm, Sunday June 29 - The Wiley platform is restored, now containing newly migrated Blackwell content

If you currently have an NIH grant or are planning to apply for one, please attend a brown bag Open Forum on Thursday, June 26, Noon – 1 pm, to learn more about recent changes to the NIH Public Access Policy. The Open Forum will be held in Room 1004, Research 1 North.

Revisions to the NIH Public Access Policy took effect April 7, 2008. These revisions require that peer-reviewed journal articles resulting from NIH funding be deposited in PubMed Central and made publicly available no later than twelve months after publication

Staff from the UCD Health Sciences Library and the UCD Office of Grants & Contracts will give a brief presentation on what the policy revisions mean to researchers and the various methods for compliance. Additional information about author rights and open access will also be presented. However, the session is primarily an open forum, so you are encouraged to bring your questions and concerns. You are also welcome to bring your lunch. We’ll supply dessert!

Effective June 1, library staff will begin phasing out e-journal records in the IMPULSE online catalog. Our Find Journals portal is the place to go for access to all library journals.

Why this step? As access to e-journals ballooned from several thousand to more than 30,000 titles over the past few years, it simply became too costly and labor intensive to maintain e-journal records in both the IMPULSE catalog and the Find Journals portal. Anecdotal evidence and statistics show that most library users prefer the simplicity and ease of using Find Journals.

What’s the difference between accessing journals via the Find Journals portal and the IMPULSE catalog?

• Find Journals includes ALL of the library’s 30,000+ journals – print and online; records are continually updated
• IMPULSE includes all print journals but only a fraction of the library’s e-journals; records are no longer maintained so many have become inaccurate

Enjoy the benefits of fast, accurate access to 30,000+ e-journals via Find Journals! Search for journal titles directly at Find Journals OR using the Search box on our home page (type the title in the Search box, click the “Journal Titles” radio button, and click “Search”). You can also browse journals by subject and by publisher/provider at Find Journals.

The graying of America’s population is resulting in a shortage of people trained to meet the unique needs of these older adults. To close this gap, University of Colorado Denver’s Anchutz Medical Campus is taking part in Careers in Aging Week, which will take place from April 13th – 19th, 2008. The event is an annual joint venture between The Gerontological Society of America and the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. On the Anschutz Medical Campus the Geriatric Health Student Interest Group, the Career Options Student Academic Community and the Geriatric Health Student Academic Community sponsor the event.

Careers in Aging Week activities will provide important information about the wide range of healthcare careers in the field of aging and aging research, and raise awareness about older populations and their needs.

By 2020, there will be 53.2 million Americans older than age 65 – forming 15.8 percent of the population – and 6.5 million of those will be over 85, according to the Census Bureau. The array of industries that will be affected by this shift is quite diverse. The graying of this country’s population is resulting in a shortage of people trained to meet the unique needs of these older adults.

The Careers in Aging Week activities on the Anschutz Medical Campus will include lunch lectures highlighting the career options in several healthcare professions, a display of library resources relating to aging and a listing on the library’s online listings in the aging field. Large LCD screens are mounted on the wall in seven of the Library’s Group Study Rooms on the 1st floor of the Library. These screens are now available for use!

The LCD screens can be attached to laptops, allowing groups to more easily collaborate, study or review a video. Cables needed to attach equipment to the LCD screens are in the Group Study Rooms.
